“Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being
of [oneself] and [one’s] family, including food, clothing, housing, and medical care.”
Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 25
What is Single Payer Insurance and Is it really what we, as Free Americans, want?
The Federal Government or a subcontractor would pay for all of the costs for the entire population from one place using revenues from taxes from employers and individuals. Now, this is totally different from Socialized Medicine where the Government owns everything! With the Single Payer System all the Government does is collect and allocate the funds for the health care ---- the care is provided privately by hospitals and clinics.
Salaries are paid by the hospitals and clinics that receive a yearly budget from the Government, by nonprofit health maintenance organizations or from fee-for-basis and individuals can choose their own providers.
All services that are medically necessary are covered by the insurance and are based on need rather than ability to pay. This insurance is equal for everyone not matter what the employment status.
A Single Payer Health Insurance System would achieve universal coverage and comprehensive benefit for all ---- the right for very person to have quality health care and safe money by reducing a lot of paperwork and having to have so many people involved in the administration. Also, the Federal Government would have more bargaining power to get medications and other needed supplies in bulk.
It all sounds really good because under the current Health Insurance System not all Insurances allow one to pick their own provider and drug formularies are limited in some of the medicines needed. When the middlemen in the insurance system would be cut out it would save taxpayers thousands, if not millions of dollars and all the rules, deductibles and paperwork that the doctors are bogged down with would go away.
There is a lot to think about though. There are a lot of failures in government run programs ----- a lot of people are denied care if they are not doing certain things that make them responsible for their illnesses like not doing the right kind of diet or exercise causing them to have heart problems or uncontrollable diabetes. Are there going to be enough doctors, nurses and other medical personnel to take care of everyone?
I am going to continue to research this and hopefully bring more thoughts to the picture. We all know that something needs to be done but, it needs to be done carefully and with much thought so that we do not go from what we have now to something worse in the long run!
