Today we have a crisis with our children ----- overweight and sedentary.

What happened? How did our children get to this point and what does this topic have to do with Affordable Health Insurance?

I don’t know about you but, When I was growing up ---- I am 60 ---- we didn’t have computers, video games, etc. We either came home to Mom, grandma, etc. or to a childcare center of some kind --- yes, and I know, some of us were latch-key kids but, even still, we did physical activity. Especially if we were children between the ages of 6 and 12 years. To build strength, confidence, coordination, and to lay the foundation for a healthy lifestyle as these children grow they need physical activity. Kids don’t mind a daily dose of fitness as long as Fun is in the picture!

It is important that we, as parents, who want the best for our children, get it going for them and I know that plenty do and I know that it is hard, especially for those who are not physically inclined!

To give your school-age child as many opportunities as possible to be active is so important! Get with your kids and find out what their interests are. Might not be the same as yours but, whatever it takes to get them going!, right? Sometimes it is also impossible, with parents schedules, to be able to get your kids involved in activities but, I bet if you really look into it, you can find ways to get your children involved by talking to other parents, setting up a carpool, etc.

A good program for children, when they are in school, is having a morning playground or gym session for at least 15 minutes ---- same at lunch and afternoon. Sitting all day in one position is one of the worse things that can happen to a body and starting when you are 6 or 7 is Not a good thing! We had this kind of physical activity ---- actually more!

It may seem that I am coming down on parents of today and I don’t understand how hard it is to work, raise a family, have time to do everything, etc. NOT!!

Two children, by myself, work, college, housework, etc. I still took time every day, sometime, to do some kind of physical activity with the kids. Just getting them to run around, playing something to get their cardiovascular system going and their muscles working and what a wonderful time to get some one of one with your children! Kids who enjoy exercise and are involved early in their lives seem to stay active throughout their lives, not all but, isn’t it up to us, as parents, to get them going on the right path? staying fit can help improve self-esteem, Helping maintain a healthy weight, and decreasing the risk of serious illnesses such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease and improving self-esteem is what a good fitness program is all about and starting early will make it all the better!

All parents are concerned about their children ---- that is a “gimme” ---- sometimes it is just hard to do for a variety of reasons but, it can happen and if parents need help there are many places to go.

One place is right here ---- got some problems in this area?!? Post your concerns and let’s see if we can, as a group, with all of our thoughts, ideas and experiences with our own children, see what can be done!
